The former Norwich City defender has signed a three-year contract at the King Power Stadium after arriving in the East Midlands earlier today to finalise the deal. Ex-Canaries first-team coach and current Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere was also reportedly under consideration by Leicester, but is understood to have rejected an approach in favour of remaining at Kenilworth Road next season. Following his appointment, Martin’s immediate task is to rebuild the Foxes as they look to chart a route out of League One following back-to-back relegations. "I'm delighted to be here and excited to begin working with the players and staff," he said, speaking to club channels . "We have to make sure the players give everything they possibly can to give the supporters, who are the most important people at every football club, because they've been here long before me and long after me they'll be here, something to be proud of," Martin added. "That's my job, to give them a team that wins and one they feel they can really go on a journey with." Martin has been out of work since his dismissal by Rangers last October but has remained a sought-after figure, turning down several opportunities in both England and Europe during his time away from the game. Former Norwich coach Jack Wilshere reportedly turned down an approach by the Foxes (Image: PA) The 40-year-old also held discussions with Norwich last November before the club opted to appoint Philippe Clement. Leicester's interest in the Scot is understood to date back more than a year, with the club's hierarchy reportedly keen to offer him the role last summer before he ultimately chose a move to Ibrox, where his tenure was cut short after just 17 games in charge. Instead, they turned to former QPR boss Marti Cifuentes, who was sacked in January with the club in the bottom half of the Championship table. The Spaniard was replaced by Gary Rowett on an interim basis, but the experienced coach was unable to prevent their drop into the third tier, just a decade after they were crowned Premier League champions. Russell Martin could be joined by long-term assistant Matt Gill at the King Power Stadium (Image: PA) It remains unclear who will form part of Martin's backroom staff at the King Power, although reports elsewhere suggest a reunion with long-term assistant and former Norwich teammate Matt Gill is a possibility. Gill has worked alongside Martin at MK Dons, Swansea City, Southampton and Rangers, but most recently spent time at West Brom under James Morrison, helping the Baggies secure their Championship status in the latter stages of last season. Martin, capped 29 times by Scotland, made 309 appearances for Norwich, winning promotion on three occasions and most notably captaining the club to a play-off final victory over Middlesbrough at Wembley in 2015.
