Emergency crews were called to the water near Verdun Beach Friday evening after reports of a person missing in the water. According to the Montreal fire department, the call came in around 7:30 p.m. Firefighters say they are currently searching the area alongside Montreal police and the Canadian Coast Guard. As of 10 p.m. about 50 firefighters were on scene, using rescue boats as the search operation continues. Officials say they do not yet have any details on the identity of the missing person. The incident comes as the borough of Verdun recently launched a new water safety awareness campaign aimed at preventing future tragedies along its waterfront. The campaign reminds residents that swimming is only permitted during the beach season, during supervised hours, and within designated swimming areas. The initiative follows three separate drowning deaths near the beach last summer. The borough says all three incidents happened outside supervised zones and operating hours. Following those drownings, additional security guards were added at the site alongside lifeguards already in place. Verdun Beach is scheduled to open June 13 and will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 30, with additional access over Labour Day weekend.
