Down by a run going into its final at-bat of the game, Jefferson County came up with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Hedgesville for a 2-1 win and the Area 1 title. There was just one run through the first five innings of the game, and that came from Hedgesville in the top of the first. Jackson Mysliwiec started out with a double, then scored later in the inning with two outs on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead. Jefferson County had a few opportunities to get on the board in the first five innings, including getting two runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but came up empty. Then came the sixth inning, when it finally seized on a scoring opportunity. With two outs, Drew Carlson started the rally with a triple to center field and scored on Easton Cogan's single immediately after, tying the game at 1-all. Brody Group followed with another single, and the next hitter, Nolan Shutts, won the game with an RBI single that scored Cogan for the 2-1 victory. Shutts each had two hits to lead Jefferson County, while Mysliwiec had two hits for Hedgesville. In Sunday's Area 1 runner-up final, Martinsburg advanced to the District 6 tournament with a 3-2 victory over Hedgesville. Hedgesville jumped into the lead, 1-0, with a run in the first inning. Eric Schultz led off the game with a single and later scored on Cash Runkles' RBI double to right field. Martinsburg responded in the bottom half of the first with two runs for a 2-1 lead. With one down, Caden Cox singled and Marcus Johnson doubled to put two runners on, and both came around to score on a passed ball to give Martinsburg a 2-1 lead. Martinsburg's lead went to 3-1 with another run in the bottom of the second on Emmett Kable's RBI single that scored Eli Leatherman. Hedgesville cut its deficit to one run, 3-2, in the top of the fourth after scoring on Kannon Vascovich's RBI double. That was as close as it got. Martinsburg had four players with one hit - Judson Roberts, Cox, Johnson and Kable. Schultz and Mysliwiec each had two hits to lead Hedgesville. Local businesses ready to assist you!
