According to a report issued this week by the County Mayor's office, total sales tax collections for Putnam County and its four municipalities were up 7.2% in May 2026, compared to the same month a year before.

According to a report issued this week by the County Mayor's office, total sales tax collections for Putnam County and its four municipalities were up 7.2% in May 2026, compared to the same month a year before. The county and its cities collected $5,957,872 in sales taxes last month. In May of 2025, that figure was $5,530,899. Business located outside of the four cities contributed $656,604 in sales tax revenue this May, compared to $546,588 last May, a 16.8% increase. Cookeville accounted for the largest increase among the cities. According to the report, the city's sales tax collections were up 6.6%. Businesses paid $4,545,128 this May, compared to $4,245,137 last May. In Algood, collections increased 1.8%, going from $497,833 to $506,958; in Baxter, the increase was 3.7% as sales tax collections rose from $121,818 to $126,435 year over year; and in Monterey, the town collected $122,746 in sales taxes last month, compared to $119,523 in the same month last year, an increase of 2.6%. On a fiscal year basis, sales tax collections were up 5.3% last July; down 0.7% in August; up 6.2% in September; 6.7% in October; 4.6% in November; 7.3% in December; 3.9% in January; 9.0% in February; 9.3% in March; 9.6% in April; and 7.2% in May. For the 11 months of the fiscal year to date, the county and its cities have collected $63,017,737.94 in sales tax revenues, compared to $59,128,367.48 for the same 11 months last fiscal year.
