A pilot was killed Friday when a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Twin Oaks Airpark south of Hillsboro, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Emergency crews responded around 3 p.m. June 12 to the airport along Southwest River Road after multiple callers reported that the plane crashed into a grassy field and caught fire, raising concerns that the flames could spread to nearby vegetation. Hillsboro firefighters were the first to arrive and found heavy black smoke billowing from the crash site. Crews quickly extinguished the remaining fire before it could spread beyond the aircraft, officials said. The aircraft’s sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, June 15, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office identified the pilot as 49-year-old Keith Urwin of Warren. The sheriff’s office assisted with the initial response, but officials said the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the crash. An FAA investigator responded to the crash Friday, according to the sheriff’s office.
